Divray (plural) Torah  A Life Changing Experience

One of the changes that our Rabbi has instituted is the member prepared Dvar (singular) Torah.  Almost to the person, each member who has prepared one, has raved about the marvelous intellectually enlightening and psyche enhancing experience.  Completing this experience allows one to feel that they are claiming a part of the Torah as their own.

I never cease to be amazed with the dichotomy between the intellectual capabilities of our members and the intimidation they feel when it comes to studying our religious heritage.  That study has been relegated to our religious staff.  We, the congregants, act as if we are amateurs who have no business venturing into the mysteries of our development.

We are a congregation of professionals and literate people.  Congregants who can prepare tax returns, legal briefs, lesson plans, courses of medical treatment etc. can also prepare a Dvar Torah.

We are indeed fortunate to live in this modern age when we can delve into the issues of our origins without the requirement of the ability to read Hebrew, Aramaic, or Yiddish.  Anyone who is familiar with the internet can attest to the disproportionate amount of electronic information published by Jewish institutions and sources.

There are many sites on the web which can give us all the information we need to complete this task.  This is our birthright! It is our inheritance far richer and more valuable than we have imagined.  As promised, it is now even easier to acquire.

In Deuteronomy chapter 30 we are told by G-d that the Torah is not in the heaven nor is it over the ocean requiring someone to go up and over to get it for us.  “But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart that thou mayest do it.”

SIGN up for the course and be able to make with honesty and conviction the following blessing.  Praised are you o G-d who teaches Torah to his people Israel.  Also recognizing that no matter how old we are we are grateful to be alive and well enough to achieve this milestone.  Blessed art thou our lord, king of the universe, who has kept us alive and sustained us, and allowed us to reach this occasion.

Let us rejoice and revel in this new found accomplishment and empowerment.
